2013 Winter Festival in Downtown Ithaca

Finally!  Ithacans get to skip the drizzles and slush of yester-years and enjoy a winter festival with classic winter weather – light fluffy snow, brisk chilly air. The annual Downtown Ithaca Winter Festival includes a National Ice Sculpting competition and a local Chowder Cook-Off. Check out the sights (& remember to imagine the chainsaw oil and simmering chowder smells) from today’s events on and around the halted-for-winter-rennovation of the Ithaca Commons:

My two favorite shots from today – a clever ice sculpture in front of Benjamin Peters and the Dewitt Cafe aquarium fish reflecting on the holiday lights. (Could certain chowder ingredients be influencing my choices?)

Many thanks to all the sculptors & chowder chefs, the folks at the Downtown Ithaca Alliance & the Ithaca weather gods -you pulled this all off with great success!

Alison Shull is an artist who’s been known to sculpt ice with her hockey skates. Down at the Winter Festival and in need of a warming station? Step inside to her current exhibit, “Hey Bud, The Tree” now through Dec. 24 in the Mezzanine Gallery at Benjamin Peters on the Ithaca Commons. Stop in to Contemporary Trends 121 N. Aurora St. to view and purchase limited edition prints of  her abstract paintings or browse and shop anytime at her on-line gallery www.alisonshull.com.
