The Women’s Opportunity Center of Ithaca: www.womensopportunity.org
What does this non-profit do? And why do I support them? Simply put, they help people help themselves. And I am all for that!
WOC serves people who are transitioning into the role of primary wage earner for their family, often under stressful conditions such as divorce or illness or death of a spouse. At WOC they can access an array of training, services and support to overcome obstacles to gaining employment and to achieving economic self-sufficiency.
This article from July 2011 describes WOC and the NYS funding crisis (http://msmagazine.com/blog/blog/2011/07/01/wheres-the-womens-opportunity/) Fortunately thanks to their successful track record, NY State funding for Ithaca’s WOC, while drastically reduced, was not cut to zero. But funding over the past few years has been drastically reduced.
Donations are now vitally important!
Cuts in the New York State budget over the past two years have prevented over 1,000 people in the Ithaca area from participating in WOC’s programs. The cuts occurred despite the fact that by NYS’s own accounting measures each $1 funded from NYS to WOC returns up to $16 to the state as revenue per year. How? Through the success of WOC participants becoming state tax paying wage earners!
WOC’s fundraising is now refocused on a broader range of sources. One successful example: WOC secured a U.S. federal government grant this year to assist family members receiving food stamps to become job ready and find employment. Federal funds require a 50/50 local match.
